Work shop 4: Small scale farm planning; Minimum tillage methodologies with advance weed suppression and cover cropping models. (this is an advanced course, and though no previous experience is necessary, taking workshops 2 and 3 prior is highly recommended.)

In this fourth workshop we continue to explore and push farther into the models practiced in  both workshops two and three. In this section we will put to test many of the ideas and theories of no-till farming in an actual farm production setting. We will experience first hand the benefits of  introducing a healthy long-term soil system. (Because of the nature of cover cropping, and the extended times needed for visual and analytical results, this course will be held over a four-week period.)

This is a HANDS ON workshop and we will be selecting, prepping, and stabilizing two small parcels of farm property for upcoming vegetable production as well as a long-term orchard section. All tools will be supplied, but work attire, boots and gloves will be needed.

Items to be covered in this segment:

  • Introduction to advanced cover cropping models; pros and cons of different systems.
  • The nitrogen myth; introduction, clarification and alternatives. (part 2)
  • Advanced nutrient cycling ; proper inputs, cycling and appropriate cover crop models for healthy soils and productive farming systems. (part 2)
  • Introduction to various weed suppression models applicable to Hawaiian soils and climate.
  • Various no-till cover cropping techniques and take down/planting procedures.
  • How to modify everyday equipment to provide large-scale no-till results.
  • Hands on construction of a no-till roller, modified riding mower, and weed eater system to accomplish no-till like the big boys.
  • Various seeding techniques, hand, manual as well as mechanical.
  • Application and techniques for applying cover crop seeds to larger acreage.
  • Proper growing, maintenance and seed collection of 6 different cover crop models.
  • Advanced hybrid cover cropping models for vegetable, feed and fuel production.
