Punaluu to Maui…and what’s up Hana!?

It’s been many years since I was farming on Maui and I am excited to be back among some of the best growing in these islands. As many of you know I have been absent from Oahu’s busy ag scene farming somewhere deep in Hana…and with some surprising results!

Over the last 9 months many of my prior consulting and teaching priorities  have been on hold while working 24/7 with Hana Ranch to help them establish their own Organic Farm. Now that they are on their way my calendar is starting to open up and it’s time to get BUSY and back on track. It’s been a long wait for many of you and I thank you for your patience and tending to the land so gratefully …and so back by popular demand the workshops are coming!! Consulting for private farms will be available starting March 15th and of course growing some of the best food the islands have to offer.

Over the next few weeks I will begin posting some of our newly designed workshops, a couple of our all time favorites and a few large scale activities to be planned for our early summer visitors.

Hope to see you in the fields again soon, happy Farming!!!

Big aloha, D

Congratulations Punaluu!

We here at Mahina Organics are absolutely ecstatic! We have some new Stewards for the farm@punaluu and couldn’t ask for a better couple to continue the years of holistic work that have already been established. It is with great honor that  I pass the torch to these outstanding people, friends and former students…I couldn’t be more proud of their progress and success!

Without further delay may I introduce Robert, Tasha and Jr…the new rock-stars of regenerative agriculture. Keep an eye out for these folks, and their outstanding produce, coming to a market near you soon.

Happy holidays!!… farmers, aspiring farmers and all green thumbs!

By popular demand, Mahina Organics is finally offering a farm internship program at the Punaluu location. Just in time to start the new year right. We have a limited number of openings and are looking for the right group of individuals to farm with. The internship program is being offered to help new, aspiring or beginning farmers to succeed within an organic/holistic frame-work. Each intern will be given their own plot of land, guidance and all supplies needed to efficiently and effortlessly grow amazing chemical free vegetables. (ALL produce grown by the intern is theirs to keep, take home, distribute, sell, etc.) The Internship program will begin the second week of January and run in two phases. ALL instruction will be based on holistic/organic practices with a larger regenerative frame-work in mind.

The first phase is designed for new aspiring farmers or current conventional farmers interested in moving away from agricultural, petrol-chemical usages. We will cover the basis for designing, establishing, and managing an efficient organic/holistic farming system; focusing on high yielding, profitable short-term crops for the open market place. Each intern will have their own plot of land to manage and harvest from.

The second phase is designed as a continuation from Phase 1 or as a supplemental course for more advanced farmers. In this second segment we will explore some options to completely close loop a farming system. Yes, all inputs generated on farm. Some of the techniques we will cover include: compost teas, natural farming techniques, bio-char and bio-dynamic sprays and preparations. Each intern will be assigned their own plot of land with directions on how to construct and make all the necessary farming inputs needed for a close loop system.

Schedules and fees as follows:

Two weeks and looking marvelous!

Great job on the cover crop farmers!!

It’s been about two weeks since the last cover crop workshop and the sunn hemp is coming in strong!! It is easily out-competing most of the previous weeds and providing a ton of soil benefits. After last week’s round of compost tea the soil really began to loosen up and the mushrooms began to appear everywhere; and as we know from the workshop, that’s the signal to get planting. Soil aeration, mineral balance with disease and pest control all in one field!

A couple of quick, strip-till plots, daikon, soybean, sweet corn, sunflower and alfalfa and we are set for a late fall harvest. Great job Farmers!!

Big Aloha, D

Hey Gang,

looks like the workshop’s sold out faster than many of you could get in, so by request, 5 more spaces added to workshop 1. Sign up and payment needs to be done by Sunday the 24th to get all catering, tools, etc in place. Info can be found at  https://mahinaorganics.com/the-farmpunaluu/starting-your-own-farm/

A couple of quick answers about the workshops:

Meals?…Lunch is included for all days, being catered by our neighborhood local eatery, Keneke’s. Meal selections can be made the morning of class. (unfortunately, if your vegan you might be stuck with eating rice and salad. Give me a holler and lets see what we can work out for your lunch) Water and light beverages will be provided, and of course the infamous ice coffee for you few.

Bathroom?…old school, bushes and Punaluu beach park.

Location? …meeting will be at Punaluu beach park bathrooms, directly across from a private entrance. (The farm is located on a private and very remote location…sorry no visitors) We will caravan all vehicles to the farm after the morning meeting.

Equipment?…no farming equipment will be needed but shoes, hats, gloves and sun protection will be required. A change of clothes, bathing suit and towel would be helpful if you plan on swimming in the river during your visit. (yes, there is a river too!)

Looking forward to seeing you all in the fields !

Aloha, farmer D
